WELCOME FROM THE CONGRESS CHAIRS
Minors represent 20% of the European population and their care is one of the most important priorities and challenges for Europe. Nowadays around the 50% of the medicines addressed to children and young patients have not been tested specifically for them.
In our days, drug development is undergoing a paradigm shift with an increasing emphasis on understanding pathology at the molecular and systems biology levels leading to more targeted therapies with disease modifying properties. There are also moves towards greater forward and reverse integration of the stages of drug development, building on the application of modelling and simulation from discovery to clinical trial. Improved integration of the development and regulation of diagnostics, drugs and devices is a clear need in making innovation more patient-centric and personalized.
Children and young patients are not little adults and they cannot be compared with adults as they are growing up and their metabolism is different. For this reason, the only way to develop better medicines for children and young patients is studying them specifically for this type of “special” population. In this context. EPTRI (European Paediatric Translational Research Infrastructure -https://www.eptri.eu) aims to create the framework for a new Research Infrastructure intended to enhance technology-driven paediatric research in drug discovery and early development phases to be translated into clinical research and paediatric use of medicines.
To this aim, Consorzio per Valutazioni Biologiche e Farmacologiche and the Athena Research and innovation center in information communication & knowledge technologies are pleased to launch the first international annual meeting on paediatrics & rare diseases, that will be held in Athens from September 30th to October 2nd, 2019. The Greek local chapter of the Controlled Release Society is participating as co-organiser.
The meeting will allow to enhance the professional competences and support for the development of expertise in the fields of pediatric research, that will be of great value for facilitating innovation and knowledge-sharing.
The topics of the meeting include: Drug Discovery, Developmental Pharmacology, Paediatric Formulations and Devices, Translation Research, Pharmacogenetics, Pharmacokinetic, Pharmacodyamic, Pharmacometric studies and Paediatric Guidelines.
We are delighted to welcome friends and colleagues to the city of Athens for the First Annual meeting on Paediatrics and Rare Diseases.
Mr. Donato Bonifazi, CEO, Consorzio per Valutazioni Biologiche e Farmacologiche
